KIWIFRUIT PROCESSING GUIDE

Cleaning a Kiwifruit Line: Open Equipment and Closed-Circuit CIP

Separate open-machine washdown from closed-circuit CIP on a kiwifruit processing line. Plan access, supply and return paths, inspection and changeover.

Map the line into cleaning duties

A whole-fruit line contains open and closed equipment, so one cleaning method should not be assumed to cover every stage. Receiving baths, belts, cleats, brushes and exposed processing parts need direct access and their agreed washdown, COP or manual procedure. Compatible tanks, product piping, thermal circuits and filling connections can be mapped as closed circuits for CIP selection.

Make open equipment accessible

Inspect the surfaces and retention points that can collect fruit material, fibre and residues. Belt return paths, brush undersides, screens, guards and drain routes need practical access in the installed arrangement. Cleaning access should be considered before the equipment is fixed into the floor plan. It also affects screen removal, maintenance handling and safe operator work around adjacent equipment.

Define each closed supply and return route

A three-tank CIP system supplies selected media to defined circuits. Identify the connected equipment, valves, isolation points and return destinations. Water quality, heating, drainage and recovery arrangements belong in the system discussion. The cleaning sequence and verification method are developed for the installed product and equipment; this website does not prescribe one chemical recipe, temperature or circulation setting for all projects.

Agree the changeover and release checks

Describe the products, expected residues and operating changes that the cleaning plan must address. Name sampling, inspection and release responsibilities where applicable. The CIP skid itself also needs drainage, access and maintenance planning. A useful supply scope distinguishes closed-circuit connections from the separate tasks needed on open machines, so they remain visible during installation and operation.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Before you choose your equipment.

Can CIP clean conveyors and brush rollers?

Open equipment retains its own accessible cleaning procedure. It should not be assumed to be cleaned by a downstream closed-circuit system.

Is one cleaning cycle suitable for all products?

The installed circuits, residues, utilities and verification requirements determine the cleaning plan.
